Availability of qualified workers is the biggest challenge facing Case Managers searching for support workers, according to a recent poll conducted by Curam.

The nature of Case Management, bringing together multiple services to support people with, often complex, long-term conditions means that finding the right care professionals for clients is not a simple task.  Continuity of care is critical to providing the highest level of support for clients and consistent, reliable care can make a significant difference in their well-being and overall experience.

At Curam, we were keen to hear from Case Managers themselves on the biggest challenges they face and correspondingly, what is most important to them when searching for support workers for their clients.  We ran a poll at our webinar in October 2024 to find out.

An overwhelming majority of the Case Managers who took part in our poll responded that the availability of qualified workers was the biggest challenge they faced when searching for Care Professionals.  71% of our respondents listed this as their top challenge.  Almost a quarter of our respondents listed finding the right personal fit at their biggest challenge with a further 6% citing a time-consuming search process as their biggest problem.  Interestingly, none of the Case Managers we surveyed reported that cost was their top challenge.

Flexibility also came up in the discussion, as did reliability as well as ensuring visa requirements were managed.

In light of the prioritisation of these challenges, it is perhaps unsurprising that the most important search factor for over half of our respondents was skills and relevant qualifications.  Real time availability was the second most important factor, with around a fifth of respondents listing it.  Cost-effectiveness and feedback and reviews from clients and/or their families were tied at 13% each in the survey.

Communication was also cited by Case Managers we spoke to as well as the attitude of the care professional.  These factors all contributed to Case Managers having confidence that they had the right person for the job for their clients.
