What is hourly visiting care?

Hourly care is when a Care Professional helps and supports those in need of care on an hourly basis. Visiting Care Professionals can stop by to take you to a doctor’s appointment or complete a chore. They can also visit on a regular basis to help you stay healthy, happy and secure. Curam’s experienced hourly Care Professionals provide specialist support to meet clients' care needs throughout the UK.

With a visiting Care Assistant, you can continue living a fulfilling life in your own home. They can support you in numerous ways:

Enable you to remain living independently
Accompany you to appointments
Provide support with domestic tasks and chores
Aid with mobility and exercise
Provide companionship and security
Prompt for medication
Assist with visiting friends and family

Home visiting care is flexible - giving you control

  • With hourly care on Curam you decide the time and type of care you need.
  • Medical care, housekeeping or simply companionship can be provided on your own terms through home care visits.
  • It is also your choice to increase or reduce the home care services as and when you need them.

Home care is tailored to you and your needs

  • Home care is one-to-one care, meaning that visiting Care Professionals can get to know your needs and lifestyle better and provide person-oriented care.
  • A visiting home Care Professional can provide specialist care to help someone with a particular condition, as well as tailoring that care to the individual's specific situation, interests and preferences.

Home care is less expensive

  • Full-time residential care is expensive. Tally up accommodation, food, medical and care support and the bill can be extensive.
  • If you don't have complex medical care needs, hourly visiting care could provide you all the support you need at a fraction of the cost. With Curam you only pay for the care you receive from your chosen Care Professional and there are no extra costs.
    contracts or fees.

Home care improves mental health

  • Familiar surroundings boost our wellbeing. We take comfort from photos and possessions which speak to us of our happiest moments. We can physically cope better in a known environment.
  • Got a pet? Sadly, care homes often deny the companionship of animals. However, a Curam Care Professional can help you navigate hazards at| home, assist with daily living tasks and even walk the dog.

Home care can be 24-hours round the clock

  • Overnight home Care Professionals support you when others can't. Their presence gives you the security to sleep better, knowing there's help available from dusk til dawn.
  • Overnight Care Professionals can manage complex medical needs, providing bathroom assistance, or simply increasing security. These are just some of the reasons people choose overnight home Care Professionals.

Home Care Professionals allow you to socialise

  • Driving to appointments, visiting friends and family, attending social clubs or keeping up with technology like Skype and Zoom can all be achieved with the help of a home Care Professional. Home Care Professionals are themselves an answer to loneliness.

Home Care Professionals can provide domestic help

  • There are countless daily tasks that| come with living independently. Meals to prepare, dishes to wash, shopping to buy, clothes to launder, admin to sort - the list is long. A visiting Care Professional can alleviate the burden of these everyday tasks, so you can pursue your own interests while still living a healthy life at home.

Home Care Professionals can provide respite care

  • The line between family and Care Professional is blurred. Loved ones often assume the role of Care Professional, supporting and assisting a friend or family member with their care needs. It can be tiring, put a strain on relationships and be physically demanding.

Respite care

  • A respite home Care Professional can step in and assume this care giver role to allow Care Professionals some time away from their responsibilities. With an opportunity to rest, our loves ones can return to their care responsibilities prepared and refreshed.

Why choose hourly visiting care?

Arranging hourly visiting care gives you the flexibility to receive care at home exactly when you want it. Unlike live-in care, hourly care gives you the personal freedom of living alone, or with family and only seeing your Support Worker when you need them.

If you have family or friends that otherwise provide support or help you around the house, hourly care can be a great solution for when your family and friends are on holiday, at work, or unavailable at short notice. With Curam, you can hire an hourly Care Assistant of your choice and build a relationship with them over time.

Care Professionals will fulfil the tasks agreed to in their service agreement. Experts and experience

Curam is a community of experts. Every Care Professional on Curam’s platform has been interviewed and fully vetted by our recruitment team. They have had a DBS check, are legally entitled to work in the UK and any qualifications mentioned on their profile are backed up with certificates.

Self-managed

Curam does things differently. Unlike care agencies, we make sure the choice of care is in your hands. You can interview Care Professionals personally before hiring them and have a final say on what their responsibilities will be in your home.

Our Care Professionals are self-employed. Their Curam fee covers the cost of their insurance, easy-to-use service agreements and a hassle-free payment system. This means that the client pays less than they would with an agency, and the Care Professional in turn receives a higher wage.

Individual support

In-home care with Curam respects independence. It is tailored to each individual while allowing them to live in the comfort of their own home. Receiving care at home can be a safer and more cost-effective alternative to a care home.

Frequently asked questions about visiting care

You can pay for hourly home care privately, with assistance from the NHS or local authority, or from a combination of different sources.

Most people who pursue care at home will pay for it privately. However, you may be able to get funding to help pay for your care. There are three steps that you can follow to ensure that you receive all the money to which you are entitled:

3 steps to follow

  1. Check your eligibility for benefits with a benefits calculator

    1
  2. Check your eligibility for NHS continuing healthcare funding

    2
  3. Apply for local authority funding

    3

If you still have difficulty funding your own care after checking the above services, you may consider other options such as equity release.

Will the local council, local authority or social services pay for hourly visiting care?

According to the NHS, you might be eligible for local council support towards the cost of your social care if you have less than £100,000 in savings (called the upper capital limit, or UCL). From October 2023 this will rise to £100,000 in savings.

Exactly how much your council will pay depends on what care you need and how much you can afford to pay.

The first step is for your council to do an assessment to check how much help you need. This is called a needs assessment. The needs assessment is free and anyone can ask for one. Find out more about getting a needs assessment.

Does the NHS provide hourly care?

Some people with long-term complex health needs qualify for free social care arranged and funded solely by the NHS. This is known as NHS continuing healthcare.

To be eligible for NHS continuing healthcare, you must be assessed by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals. The team will look at all your care needs and relate them to:

  • What help you need
  • How complex your needs are
  • How intense your needs can be
  • How unpredictable they are, including any risks to your health if the right care is not provided at the right time

Your eligibility for NHS continuing healthcare depends on your assessed needs, and not on any particular diagnosis or condition. If your needs change then your eligibility for NHS continuing healthcare may change.

How to pay for hourly care with Curam?

With Curam, you pay for care through a secure payment system on our app or website. Your Care Professional of choice will create a service agreement and shift invoice, which will automatically be sent to your Curam account for your approval.

Once you have approved these, you will be taken to the payment portal. Your payment is held securely until the shift is completed and is then released to the Care Professional two working days after the end of the shift, minus the Curam fee. Shift invoices typically cover one to two weeks of care at a time, but specific payment frequency can be agreed with your Care Professional.

Off-platform and cash payments are not accepted. These are liable to a penalty fee of £1,000 + VAT. Please see our terms and conditions for more information, specifically point 9.3.

Hourly visiting care is just that: hourly. You and your visiting Care Professional can decide on a regular schedule that suits your needs, whether that be every weekday afternoon for several hours at a time, or only for a few hours once a week.

If you are seeking part-time hourly care from one Care Professional, your Care Professional will likely have other clients they see during other shifts throughout the week. You can seek to work with other care assistant in rotation or arrange for one-off visits as needed.

Hourly visiting Care Professionals are often needed at the same few times a day, so those who are more flexible in their care times will find they have more available Care Professionals to choose from. If your care needs are concentrated at night or exceed 8 hours per day, overnight care or live-in care may be better suited to your needs.

Depending on your care needs, the responsibilities of your hourly PA may include meal planning, grocery shopping and preparing meals. In these instances, most people pay for the meals that the PA prepares or eats during their time in their client’s home.

However, many visiting hourly Care Professionals will not spend enough time in your home and will eat on their own time outside of their shift. Expectations around meals can be agreed in the service agreement.

Many visiting Care Professionals are comfortable helping with or managing an array of household chores that fit into their care schedule with you, including laundry, basic cleaning, gardening, mail and email management, taking out the rubbish, grocery shopping, running errands, preparing meals and more. These expectations around housework can all be agreed upon in the service agreement

While hourly Care Professionals are not professional cleaners, they are often happy to do basic household cleaning chores during their shifts such as vacuuming, wiping down counters and cleaning up after their client. Expectations around cleaning can be agreed in the service agreement.
