I have worked in both nursing and residential care, caring for vulnerable adults suffering from dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, stroke and brain injury. I am currently working with young people and adults with learning disabilities and mental health problems. I work with individuals who have autism, epilepsy, depression, bipolar, smith Magnes, Prader- Willi syndrome and personality disorder. As a senior support worker, I am responsible for medication ordering and administration, supervising the shift, liaising with external professionals like dieticians, social workers, advocates, care coordinators, mental health nurses and psychologists. I also raise or report safeguard alerts whenever it is necessary. I support service users with their daily activities like shopping, medication administration, prompting for personal care, finance budget, support with mental well being ie. listening and being there when they need to talk. I am a wife and a mother to 4 boys between the ages of 20 and 3 and my experience within these roles has strengthened my character and patience. I have learnt to treat everyone as individuals rather than as a group because they all have different preferences about things in their everyday lives. I have learnt to be a good listener and that to understand their needs I need to come down to their level and sometimes put myself in their shoes. I have volunteered and worked with young people who taught me that listening to people regardless of their age, race or ethnicity is very important and essential in the care sector. This is when person-centred care comes into effect, as all care provided depends on the individuals’ choices rather than treating them as a group. The same applies to adults in nursing or residential care. Each individual has a right to making preferred choices about their care and this should be recorded in their Person-Centred Support Plan. It is important to know residents or service users as individuals, i.e. their likes when it comes to nutrition requirements, preferred activities, their communication skills, mobility status, medical history and mental health. Working with people with learning disabilities or struggling with mental health can be quite a challenging job that requires patience, respect and empathy. I would like to think of myself as someone who is mentally and physically prepared to work with people of all ages, race and culture or religion and also mental and physical disability. I am reliable and I enjoy my work very much. I am supportive as a team member, above all, I have acquired good communication skills with service users and colleagues, which is very important in my line of work. My love for helping and supporting individuals who cannot fully support themselves motivated me into studying and acquiring a degree in Health and Social Care hoping into pursuing a career in Nursing. When I am not at work I enjoy travelling, going on holidays, taking walks, sightseeing, watching movies indoors or outdoors with weather permitting. I love cooking, gardening and cleaning. Above all these, I love being a mother and spending time with my family whenever I can is very important and precious to me.
