After spending five years at Prince of Wales & Royal Clifton Hotels in Southport, I went on for 13 years as the Tenant of the Albert, Bowness-on-Windermere My son Richard is now Director – Estates, of the Birtenshaw Group, who provides a creative and dynamic range of Care and Education services for children and young adults with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). Normally, based in Bolton, but has responsibilities for the newly built Merseyside site. I have lived in Bowness-on-Windermere, in the central English Lake District for over 50 years. Some may call it paradise, but with over a million visitors each year on the promenade, some 200 yards from home, it has its moments. 8.00pm is so different to High Noon! To relax, besides walking Sky, a Therapy dog, in this amazing area, in the woods just over a mile away, she loves it, as it a world away from the chaos of the village. I have a Lowrey Grand Marquee organ, which is top of the range machine. More whistles, buttons and sounds than you can play. Very rewarding. My audience usually puts her head between her paws and goes to sleep, it is so relaxing for us both. Having retired from an active hospitality role, I work with Shared Lives, part of the Health and Social Care umbrella of Westmorland & Furness Council. My training is bang up to date, with specialised training in Autism and Dementia. In November 2019, a young autistic gentleman moved in with me, and together we have built the foundations of as strong future for him, as he now started his 2nd year at the University of Cumbria in Carlisle. I also have day respite “clients”, one of whom had Dementia, and it was suggested by his wife, (a judge at Crufts) that I should take Sky’s journey further. We applied to Therapy Dogs Nationwide (TDN) in August 2023, and the rest as they say is history. Sky is a ten-year-old lady Springer Spaniel, who I rescued in November 2022, and loves the attention she gets whenever we are out. My aunt lived in a nursing home until her death earlier this year, and on our visits, she was adored by all the resident’s. I love to explore the “hidden” parts of the English Lake District, but often venture further afield into the Yorkshire Dales, Scottish Borders and the Fylde Coast, with a full, clean driving licence. More recently I have looked after an elderly gentleman with Alzheimer's as a waking night, and also as a live in carer for a lady who was recovering from a stroke. We worked together to promote her independence and I assisted when required. Her health has improved greatly over several weeks. Both contracts were on a self-employed basis. I work closely with the physio and Occupational Therapists. I include the daily exercises to strengthen muscle groups and balance to aid mobility and independence. I also have experience as a Personal Assistant (PA) working with children and young adults with additional needs. I offer hourly companionship/care/chaperone duties and also respite care. Prior to this, a support worker and I have also previously worked at various care homes (through an agency) and clinical placements whilst qualifying for my HND in adult nursing back in 2011. My first live-in care was for a couple that had not previously had a live-in carer, both were initially very against the idea, not understanding why suddenly they needed to have a stranger living in their home. Although initially a challenge, I managed to quickly put them at ease by reassuring them that I was there to keep them safe and secure in their own home and assist and enable them to maintain their normal routine and lifestyle as much as possible, to be a companion, but also to help them remain independent in their own home and cherish all the memories they’ve made there. I built up a great relationship with both them and their family andI cared for them for a year. Skills and Experience • Empathy, patience and compassion towards others • Personal care, assisting with shower, drying, dressing, shaving etc whilst also respecting their dignity and maintaining their independence where possible. • Monitoring pressure points and pressure care • Helping with mobility, prompting using walking aids where necessary or using hoists • Overseeing medication according to the care plan • Household chores helping around the home, such as vacuuming, cleaning and laundry • Preparing and cooking meals of client’s choice • Running errands and assisting with tasks such as shopping • Updating care plans, reviewing and record keeping • Reporting important details to colleagues to ensure a safe and up to date care for client • Preparing for social outings • Liaising with family, district nurses, Drs and other healthcare professionals • Keeping the home environment safe and secure • Keeping up to date with the Care Certificate modules which cover 15 modules including Basic Life Skills, Moving and Handling and Medication About Me I enjoy driving up to the Lakes and taking the dog for long walks up in the Hills and recently started to do some of the Wainright walks. I absolutely adore all creatures great and small. Although have had cats most of my life I now have a black miniature cockapoo, 15 months old called Kip. He stays with my parents when I am working although I have taken him to work with one of my clients as he loves dogs and requested I bring him along too. I found it actually helped uplift his spirits so it worked well. I also love cooking and experimenting with new healthy ideas and recipes and I can loose myself in painting seascapes, animals, portraits and abstract when I have some spare time. For live in care I prefer to work one week on, one week off, mainly because I don’t like to be apart from my dog for too long.
