My mum, aunt, and elder sister are nurses/carer. Therefore, it would not be surprising that I have chosen to continue in this field. Also, my desire for embracing being a Health care Support worker is for the satisfaction derived from affecting people's life. The passion and emotional support for caring for patients is something I grew up with as a child shadowing my mum, aunt and elder sister. It's evident that I have something to give out; thus, I fancy this role as a HSW in this industry. I have built that strong relationship with patients and nurses from my years of working in hospitals, nursing homes etc as a healthcare assistant. It's my goal to put patients first in everything I do, giving them a sense of belonging. I value patients, their families, and staff. Respecting their aspirations and commitments in life is paramount. It's vital that I understand the patient's priorities, limits and abilities; with this, I care for them adequately. I don't compromise the quality of care; this has earned me respect from patients and their families. I compassionately care for patients; I feel their pains, and I don't fail to reassure them consistently. I treat all patients the same without discrimination. Living with my grandmother has also fortified my choice in healthcare. I have been working in hospitals and care homes for years and equipped myself with the necessary required skills to care for adult and young people. I have built my confidence in working under a tight schedule and under pressure. I know healthcare support worker is a stressful job where traumatic situations are frequent, but I have determined to put my dream in front of me. I am obliged to always deliver person-centred care to the patients. Patience is one of the key traits that I hold on to each day. I learnt to communicate clearly and concisely working with adult and young people. Timekeeping is another skill that I learnt working in healthcare. I have learnt to apportion tasks in smaller units and set realistic targets. My communication, timekeeping and organisational skills have also helped me function in a team productively. My tolerance and knowledge derived working in some of the most challenging wards like acute medical units, accident & emergency units and critical care units, put together with all the other skills learnt, make me a stronger support worker. It's beautiful when looking into a patient's eyes and sees the gateway to their soul when only a caring touch or word can make a connection. I like being blessed, and I count my blessings daily for all the patients I have helped gain better health or independence in life. High standard and quality care is what I'm about at all times.
