It was the best career choice I ever made! I started out doing voluntary work with the elderly and young people, and soon acquired my first paid job in an education provision mentoring children and young adults with emotional and behavioral difficulties (6-18 yrs). From there I moved into residential work in a school working 1:1 with young adults with very complex needs and challenging behaviours. Then I made the move into adult services (working with all ages from 18 – 80+). The adults I have supported during my time as a professional support worker have included a range of needs, including learning disabilities, physical disabilities (inc. severe cerebral palsy), brain injury, dementia, autism, mental health etc (I also have intimate experience of dementia as I lost my mother to the disease). However, the majority have been able to live independently. and my role has been to support them both in the home and out in the community. This has included personal care, dressing, medication, help with cleaning and cooking, finances, admin, as well as facilitating engagement in a whole range of social and leisure activities in the wider community. I find the role incredibly rewarding and love the variety and challenges each day brings. My main motivation is to make a difference and have a positive impact, which means I work hard to enable and promote independence, and aim to facilitate opportunity and a sense of fulfilment whenever and wherever I can. My approach is very person-centred which means I always put the needs and wants of the person I am working with first. I listen and am attentive and always respond with empathy and patience. Cheerful by nature and with a positive outlook, I bring a friendly, calm and caring attitude to all my clients. Always willing to help, I am hard working, committed and take pride in what I do. I am reliable and punctual and have found a good sense of humour to be a real asset in many, if not most, situations. I have 3 clients at the moment so I don't have much time currently available. However, I will help if I can, so do please get in touch! Simon
