I’ve been a carer and a support work in both mental health and Nursing field since 2012. At the moment I’m a final year mental health student nurse in the University. Also actively working as an Agency worker in a residential nursing home as a Health Care Assistance, and hospitals. During this Period, I managed to build an interpersonal relationship with the residents. I enjoyed spending quality time with them; listening and talking to them, engaging in recreational activities together and occasionally assisting them with some aspects of their personal care. A majority of the residents were either confused or depressed and nothing gave me more joy than being there for them when they need me, to comfort and reassure them. I was able to work on my own initiative and also as part of a team. A few month later majority of my shift was centered around homes with people suffering from Dementia and Autism. I was constantly faced with Challenging behaviors that needed to be dealt with very professionally. My ability to manage these behaviours when they arise and being able to identify early warning signs that could potentially lead to escalated situations meant that I was well equipped with adequate training and skills needed to perform my role as an HCA worker. Among my experiences in mental health sector, I have gained a lot of skills and experiences, both certified and online trainings courses which runs concurrently on a yearly basis ensuring the 6Cs of nursing (care, compassion, courage, communication, competence) is promoted always in getting the job done, effectively and efficiently with great professionalism making sure patient is safe and well treated with dignity and respect. In the mental health settings, I have worked on a 1-1 with patient with challenging behaviours, autistic children and patient with personality disorder. In all the 4 levels of mental health observations, I am familiar and experiences all, starting from hourly 1-1 observations, level 2 observation which we call intermittent and both level 3 at harms length and level 4 observation. During my working with agencies, it gave me a lot of access to work in different hospitals settings with patient in 136 where decision is been made if they could be sectioned or realise. Have been involve and worked in mental state examination been an advocate compassionate carer. Medium secured hospitals, Close secured, forensic environment, Acute ward, Prisons due to mental health statues, and community. Ever before I decided to change field and working in the health care sector, I have worked in offices as an accessible transport officer in the government council for more than 6 years, training the elderly in care homes, how to drive their motor scooters in the street and for holiday leisure. My training further transcend how we assess client in obtaining a freedom pass, Anger management training, Alcohol and drug abuse training, Disability awareness training, first aid training and the other of the day was discreet, because of the sensitive information of clients and service users we uphold. I acquired great skills working with the project management team and as a team, working under my initiatives as a lone worker. Desire and will power begin to rise in my everyday activities, aspiring to become a mental health nurse so as to help humanity more, bearing in mind that the only way to make this a reality is to acquire more knowledge and skills in furthering my education to bring my career into reality. After years of leaving high school, I did not relent studying taking up courses and examines to develop myself, working with various firms over years had made me to acquire a lot of computer skills, both writing and information gathering. In order to gain more knowledge and experience I took up an online course in mental health and social care which I had an associated diploma (SIP) with a distinction. I believe with all this skills and experience I have had over years will really be an added value to me as your carer.
