As she progressed with age, I was also becoming a young woman,I could realise she was getting tired and I would offer to do anything for her, so I became a Carer without knowing. I loved reading novels and my grandmother enjoyed listening to me read out loud ,it became our Saturday night activity as I wouldn’t be going to school the following day. Walking with my grandmother taught me to listen as she always had a tale to tell, Sundays became my favourite days as I was always looking forward to listening to another story. When I became a Professional Carer , that’s when I realised how much my childhood impacted in my life, I empathise with everyone I care for, I listen to them and participated in any activities they enjoy. Caring for elderly or anyone who needs my help gives me a purpose in life. In my spare time I like to exercise ,cook, watch movies or read. I have been a Professional Carer for the past nine years, cared for individuals with Dementia, Parkinson's,Epileptic,Physical disabilities ,COPD, Stroke,Palliative care. Started caring in a Nursing home for two and a half years ,moved to Supported living with young adults transitioning to adulthood from 2010 to 2015 . 2015 - 2017 worked with The Good Care Group as a Live-in Professional Carer supporting elderly with various conditions in their own homes. August 2017 my aunt had a stroke and I had to give up work and care for her. October 2018 she passed away, November 2018 I started working with Elder Care as a Live in Carer supporting elderly. As a Carer I have acquired various certificates including, Care Certificate, First Aid,Moving and Handling, Mental Health awareness Level 2 to mention a few. I’d like to believe that I am a great Carer as everyone I’ve cared for has given my employer a really good feedback about my work, as a trained Carer I believe in person centred care, we are all different and our needs are different, everything I do with anyone I seek permission and let them know what I wish to do. I do specialise as a Palliative and End of Life Personal Assistant/Carer and as a community End of Life Doula but if you’re not palliative or end of life don’t let that put you off exploring if I might be the right person to meet your needs as I have a wealth of transferable skills and always open to learning new ones! I’ll also add to that to not look at my age and think “nah, she’ll be too old”. I’m healthy, enjoy running, walking, wild swimming and camping and am always up for making the most of life. Working in the end of life field is not all doom and gloom you know. Most people want to live fully right up until the last breath and that includes getting in as much laughter as possible so you could say I’m well versed in engaging with life even in the quiet moments which I love too. So, as well as supporting people in having their wish to die at home fulfilled as practicably as possible I also support people in living at home in a variety of ways. I'm here to alleviate some of the stresses of living independently and as fully as you can and make the time more about quality and less overwhelming. Now on to my End of Life Doula explanation. As an End of life Doula I serve as a non-medical practitioner, supporting you and your loved ones as you navigate your end of life experience. I make myself available to assist a dying individual and, typically, the family before, during, and after a death occurs in order to provide physical, emotional, psychological, and even spiritual support. I complement systems already in place, allowing caregivers to feel well supported and those living remotely the assurance that their loved-one is well supported. You can bring an End of Life Doula on board whether you are being cared for at home, care home, hospice or hospital. First and foremost an End of Life Doula is a grounding, reliable, knowledgeable, comforting and reassuring presence during an emotional time. I provide knowledge of the death process and a compassionate resource for families who may be overwhelmed and grieving. I advocate for you. I will meet you where you are and assist with developing a cohesive plan which honours all who are involved. But my service as a doula goes beyond that. I’m fully insured both as a doula and PA and have an Enhanced DBS on the update service.
