I'm professional, dedicated and motivated, and adept at working autonomously, or as part of a team. I am a Registered Paramedic and worked for the NHS Ambulance Service for 22 years, until recently, responding to emergency and urgent 999 calls. I have worked as a Disability Analyst (PIP assessor), and as a private carer and personal assistant (PA). I also have a BA (hons) in Fine Art. My move into private care work started after a friend asked me to care for his mum when she was discharged home after being under mental health section in hospital for over 7 years. I worked closely with her, her family and her mental health team and through word of mouth I was asked to support other people in their own homes. I found that my Paramedic role and Ambulance Service experience translated really well into private care work, so now I only work supporting people in their own homes and I absolutely love my work. Recently I have found myself supporting three couples - the males all have Dementia and other co-morbidities, including Parkinsons disease, and three of the females have heart conditions and other co-morbidities. My work is varied - I manage all of one couples medication, medical conditions, care and appointments, as well as supporting them with shopping, gardening, admin, some personal care occasionally, regular observations and anything really that they ask me to assist with. The male has recently had to have an abdominal drain which I have monitored and supported him with. Another couple I mostly support as a companion but am also there for support and management of aggressive episodes that the male occasionally has - purely relating to his Dementia. I have recently finished supporting a lovely man with Dementia and Parkinsons disease who now needs residential care - we have made fine silver jewellery and collages together, talked about all sorts, walked and done Parkinsons exercise videos together, done crosswords and quizzes, pottered about the garden, discussed shared interests - music, art, places - and he has set me homework every week, for me to learn all about Architects, Musicians and Artists that he admires. He has also disclosed a lot of information to me about the hallucinations that he experiences with his conditions and this has been very educational for me. One of the ladies I support had just had heart surgery when I started supporting her and her husband and shortly afterwards she had quite a serious stroke. I arrived as it was happening and recognised the signs. She was treated in hospital and discharged 5 days later into my care, along with the early discharge teams support. I have worked very closely with her, doing regular exercises with her and supporting her day to day with her recovery - she is doing incredibly well and we have had lots of fun and laughter. Another lady I support with tasks around the house - cleaning and laundry mainly, but also pet care, occasional shopping and medical support. She will often ask me to help her with 'medical things' - reading hospital letters, checking her blood sugars as she is Diabetic, ordering medication, speaking with her GP and taking observations. I have just completed a level 2 certificate in the 'Principles of Dementia Care' because I really enjoy working closely with people with Dementia. A few years ago I became quite unwell with Covid and long Covid. For some months my memory was shocking - I was not retaining information that I had heard only moments before and I lost big chunks of my memories. I lost confidence and didn't trust myself to drive for several months. I was lucky though and although I am still missing some memories from my past I was able to 'retrain' my brain and recover my ability to remember things, to drive, to return to front line Paramedic work after several months off and to return to living my life independently. People suffering with Dementia are not so lucky and I feel that my experience gave me a glimpse into their 'worlds', which I think is why I feel so passionately about Dementia care. In my 999 role I have vast experience of assessing, triaging, treating, and managing mental health, medical, childbirth and traumatic emergencies. And blue light driving, of course. In my Disability Assessor role I am experienced in assessing the functional ability of people with Learning Difficulties/Disabilities, mental health, medical and physical conditions, using the Biopsychosocial Model, which takes into account that we are all human, and that multiple factors can - and do - contribute to how a person is feeling or managing, and that we have to consider all factors in a situation to gain a good clear picture of how and why a person is struggling to manage, in order that we best support them. In my private carer/PA role, I'm a human being, supporting other human beings in whatever ways they require support, in order to live the best and most comfortable and trouble-free lives that they can, taking into consideration their individual situations and needs. I'm a natural carer and - thanks to my Ambulance Service experience - there is very little of human life and death that I have not experienced. I am well used to finding myself in bizarre and surreal situations. I have found myself up ladders changing light bulbs, donating my lunch, cooking simple meals or fetching a few food items from local shops for patients struggling to cope, I have stripped beds, scrubbed floors, showered patients covered in faeces who have no one else to call and have called 999 in desperation. I have delivered babies, resuscitated babies, children and adults, held the hands of people taking their last breaths, spoken soothing words to them as they have exited this world, knowing that the hearing is the last thing to go, and held the loved ones of those that there is nothing more I can do for. I’ve found myself in ditches in the dark and the pouring rain, resuscitating or trying to save victims of road traffic incidents. I have saved injured Donkey’s, Stag’s and lost dogs on my Ambulance travels. I have called electric companies, gas companies, phone companies, water companies, to sort out issues with supplies, when people have got nowhere using the traditional routes and have called 999 for help - Ambulances are sent to these people to ‘welfare check’ that they are of sound mind - and once we are there, we will help in whatever way we can to resolve whatever problem they are encountering. I have changed a flat tyre on a car for a young couple that I came across on my way across the pitch black Forest, returning to base for a 3am finish. They had no phone signal to call for help and no idea how to change a flat tyre. As an Ambulance Paramedic you become a natural 'trouble-shooter', and you wear many different hats. We are taught early on in our training that we are expected to be whatever/whomever each patient needs us to be. We are adaptable, flexible and great at improvisation when there is no clear cut answer or outcome to a situation, and for me this translates well in to care work. I don't have set ‘things’ that I will or won't consider, and I am happy to take on those jobs or work with those clients that others might find complex or difficult.  BH22 9TL 165266 Hi, my name is Kev. I have been involved in private care work for two years now. Before that I worked for the Ambulance Service NHS Trust for thirteen years, working on front-line emergency ambulances as an Emergency Care Assistant (ECA). Before that I worked as non-emergency ambulance crew for three years. During my ambulance career I encountered pretty much everything that can happen to a human being in life (and, unfortunately, death). My day-to-day role was being part of a front-line NHS emergency ambulance crew and responding to emergencies as needed. I attended everything from mental health crises, to life-threatening medical emergencies, to serious and fatal trauma. My role over the years also gave me a vast experience of dealing with non-emergency work which could range from people calling us out just to talk to someone due to loneliness; people calling for clarification on medication or smaller chronic health needs; even someone who needed some advice on using their new telephone! I dealt with a whole array of departments within the spectrum of the health system - GP’s (both patients own and out of hours), hospital wards, social services, mental health teams, safeguarding teams etc. My work was often challenging and I became very adept at using the resources available to me but also thinking outside the box and often taking unorthodox routes to gain the best outcome for a patient. Before leaving the Ambulance Service I was offered the role of carer for a lady who had severe mental health problems and would not/could not provide adequate care for herself. During this role I worked closely with mental health nurses, to whom the lady was known. We developed a system of care, through trial and error and slowly establishing trust. It was an organic process that took into account the lady’s fragile mental health and the requisites for adhering to at least her basic needs. I was told after working with the lady for some time that the team had seen the most progress in her for the seven years they had known her. Unfortunately she passed away after a short illness and I was again looking for a suitable client. Shortly after I was put in contact with a man who had autism and early-onset dementia. The family of the man had been trying for a number of years to find a suitable carer for him but, due to the difficulties of his autism, complex stoma needs and then dementia, they had struggled to find anyone to stick around. I bonded with this chap straight away and over the course of the next several months we formed a close bond. Sadly the chap became ill and was unwilling to accept any form of medical help during hospitalisation. He deteriorated quickly and was taken to a hospice for palliative care, where I stayed with him and his family for over a week until he passed away. Recently I have been working with a couple of clients simultaneously. One is a chap who had been referred to me via the mental health team as someone who I might be able to help with. This man had developed acute mental health problems and his family were struggling to understand and cope with the situation, meaning that basic day-to-day functions were not being taken care of. I visited him a few days a week to give him some company, companionship, hopefully some laughs! The other is a lady with complexities resulting from her dementia. I now find myself looking for suitable clients that I think I could bring something of value to. My work with the most difficult patients and situations during my ambulance work has given me a rare ability to deal with those clients/patients/families that have, for want of a better term, ‘slipped through the net’ and find it almost impossible to retain the services of a carer. I seem to have found myself using a mixture of my character, temperament and long and wide-ranging experience within my ambulance career to work with those people whose care needs are a little more diverse or different to others. I always loved the challenge of trying to get a positive outcome from a difficult situation or person. This has now filtered down into my current working practices and I enjoy meeting people who are otherwise deemed to be problematic or even impossible to deal with. A lot of situations can be defused and made better with a sense of humour, I have always found. I try to have a laugh with the people I work with as well as listening to them and trying to anticipate their needs. My range of experience/skills are listed in my profile, but I believe those little green tabs don’t fully cover the qualities needed to be an effective carer and there is no substitute for compassion, understanding and patience. I have old-school values when it comes to working with clients and I believe in being open, honest, respectful and treating clients with dignity. I have a very flexible approach to working, with regards to hours and needs and am always willing to talk and chip in if someone needs help. I am willing to provide basic grooming and personal hygiene care, also basic housekeeping needs, including shopping. I drive and am more than willing to take clients for a day out somewhere for a change of scene. I am very experienced in dealing with medications; administration, keeping up-to-date records and organising nomad/dosette boxes etc. I am also more than happy to perform medical observations and liaise with any departments that would need to be updated/informed etc. My medical background places me well to be around in the event of accidents/injuries/falls etc. One of my biggest enjoyments is cooking and I am more than happy to provide meals (either ‘meals-on-wheels’ varieties or fresh home-cooked) and make up batches of meals if required/wanted. I am/have always been a pet owner and am very happy to care for pets too. I have many hobbies and am, by nature, a naturally curious person and love to listen to people talking about their experiences and views. I have excellent references available. In all these cases I work well with third parties, GPs, Physiotherapists, District Nurses, Palliative team, Specialist therapists (speech) My typical day would be ensure my client is assisted with their personal care and is well groomed. I am able to provide a nail cutting services and make sure they look their best, ensuring they have been given the choice of what they would like to wear. I would then prepare any meals, administer medication and ensure there are sufficient drinks so they stay well hydrated through the day. I am more than happy to then complete any home chores, put on the washing, change bedding, hoover, empty bins, and ensure the home is pristine. If I need to leave a snack for later, that will be left ready for when required. If the client is wanting to go out to any activities, or to do some shopping, I have a full clean driving licence and will happily take my client out to their favourite coffee shop for their most enjoyed treats. Before I became a Carer, I worked in Regulation in an office environment, and since I have done Care, it has made me realise how valuable and precious our lives are and to be able to give the next person the opportunity to live their lives their way and to the make it as fulfilling as possible. I love entertaining, cooking and travelling, which is another way to meet people from all walks of life, discover the interesting foods they eat, and just to learn about the history of their country. This has proved beneficial being a Carer because I can always share my travel stories and prepare meals differently to make it all the more interesting. Having "crafternoon" sessions, is another way I enjoy engaging with my clients ensuring they are improving their fine motor skills, it improves their self esteem and will bolster their mood. Throughout my career, I have always actively participated in continuous personal development gaining not only qualifications but a vast array of experience. I started my career working in domiciliary care, undertaking daily visits to clients in their own homes. This was predominantly working with individuals with early to late-stage dementia and elderly care. However, I also cared for clients with degenerative disease and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis. My next role was working within the palliative care team in Christchurch. This involved caring for people in their final weeks of life. This role was not only supporting the individuals to have a dignified, comfortable death but also supporting family and loved ones through this process. In this role, I also worked closely with a multi-disciplinary team that included nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and general practitioners. I currently work as a support worker, supporting people who have learning disabilities and mental health concerns. I am passionate about enabling my clients to live life to the fullest and being as independent as their condition allows. This role allows me to work with people who require very little support day to day, such as finances and shopping as well as people who require full 24-hour packages with two support staff. Throughout my varied career, I have completed care-related NVQ level 2 and 3 qualifications and I have become competent and confident in the following skills: -Palliative care -Medication administration -Accurate record-keeping and auditing of documentation -Writing and reviewing care plans as part of a multidisciplinary team -Catheter care, I have been trained for individual clients by a district nurse and am willing to have specific training for prospective clients as required -Stoma care, I have been trained for individual clients by a district nurse and am willing to have specific training for prospective clients as required. I have my own car which has business insurance allowing me to take clients out if they do not have access to their own transport. This car has enough space for a manual wheelchair if required. I love to cook and I eat a well-balanced diet myself, I would be more than happy to help with nutrition and cooking for anyone who requires this assistance.
