Not having any grandparents I was drawn to older people as a child and would visit older neighbours and help with ironing, tidying around and filling out forms. I was always fascinated by their early life experiences and loved hearing their stories. On leaving school I went into farming, then to University to study Countryside Management, after which I took a few years out to volunteer in my home town, training as an advisor at my local Citizens' Advice Bureau and with the WRVS delivering Meals On Wheels. In 1997 I moved to London and spent an exciting five years as a Transport Planner and then four years in the Lake District National Park Authority as Traffic & Transport Officer. I started a family in 2002. In 2011 I started working for a local community care organisation, had first aid and medication training and quickly became a Senior Carer taking on Out of Hours management and staff rotas. I then spent two years as a Medical Secretary at a GP practice, consolidating my medical knowledge, and left there to spend the past five years looking after my progressively ill mother, who was nursed in bed with a permanent catheter for the last two years of her life. I was her sole advocate, had Power of Attorney for both financial and health & welfare, and managed her personal affairs as well as her care. I enjoy cleaning, organising, cooking and helping people to get the very most out of life in a limiting situation... I have seen both sides of caring: as both a carer and a broker of care packages. I care about timekeeping, doing things properly and providing added value. Rather than be a time-pressured employee of an agency, I relish the opportunity to make meaningful connections with people and develop trusted friendships: this was what I wanted for my mum. I have a current Enhanced Disclosure certificate and in my previous employment as a community carer I completed medication and moving & handling training, but do not have the paperwork to hand at the moment. I have worked with people that have Autism, Dementia, Learning Disabilities, Live in, companionship and severe challenging behaviours. I have also worked in different wards within NHS Scotland as a Clinical Support Worker. I am able to offer appropriate support to meet the diverse individual needs within the organisation policies and procedures. I am able to realise potential and encourage the residents to be independent through PersonCentred Approach for them to lead a full active and socially centred lives. I am able to treat everyone equally regardless of their gender, race, age and colour. I am also able to work with such people confidently through the training of Positive Intervention and Support Plans and being able to assess the risks before hand. Through SVQ II, HNC Care Practice, I have the knowledge and skills to provide quality care. I have gained the skills on recording information accurately with due regard for confidentiality within the policies guidelines. I am able to observe, assess, evaluate and report anything of health and safety concern and everything I do in line with Code of Conduct and SSSC Law and National Care Standards in Scotland. I am computer literate to update the changes and updating family and health professionals as required. I have gained the importance of giving respect, choice, privacy and dignity to anyone at all times. I am a mature, responsible person with a very caring nature. I believe in giving the best to the less privileged people through my own life experiences. Loosing a son through death who battled with a chronic illness for a very long time has made me get satisfaction working with people in similar situations. It has given me a depth understanding of how it is rewarding to help such people to have full meaningful lives through my personal attitude and being sympathetic. My working experience has equipped me with the importance of working as a team to achieve a set goal by being honest and transparent. I have managed to work and prioritise my work. I have a commitment to punctuality and reliability and flexibility. My other personal qualities are being able to support other people emotionally, listening and being trustworthy.
